It turns out that the Spinball team was completely unaware that the rights for the original Sonic music belonged to Dreams Come True, who had become quite famous since the music was composed two years prior. Among the group was Hirokazu Yasuhara, who, upon seeing the start-up sequence, wondered how the Spinball team talked Sega into paying for the rights to the original Sonic theme song. On the final day of Spinball's development, the team was throwing their 'end-of-project' party when the Japanese group working on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 dropped in to see how things turned out. This was the first (and thus far, only) Sonic game to be developed entirely in the USA. Same as most Sonic games, except without the fun. Sonic must collect rings, bounce around pinball-like environments and defeat the occasional boss. Especially when it's a game in which the collision detection is rubbish, the graphics and music lack the style and detail of other Sonic games, and the whole thing becomes boring and repetitive very quickly. I've never been a fan of the pinball levels in the good Sonic games, so making an entire game out of those kinds of levels didn't seem inspiring somehow. Yes, it has Sonic in it, and there are appearances by Dr Robotnik, but basically it's something nobody would give a second glance if Sonic hadn't been put in it. Well, this game is like a Sonic version of the Dizzy spin-offs. Occasionally the spin-offs produced a really good game (like the ZX Spectrum version of 'Kwik Snax'), but more often than not they were nothing but tat with the name Dizzy tacked on to help them sell. There were the platform/puzzle games which were great, and then there were the spin-offs. Sonic Superstars is coming to PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC this Fall.Did you ever own a ZX Spectrum, C64, Amiga, Atari or any other computer on which the Dizzy games were released? These consisted of two sets of games. There's all these things we can do because we have 3D models, even though we have a 2D game style and a game format, we're able to play around and do things that the classic Genesis and Game Gear titles couldn't do." Or it could be a boss battle that we're going to have in this kind of 3D space. Maybe it's going to be turning the character, spinning the character in a way that we couldn't really do with the classic look and the pixel art. So sometimes it's going to be sending the character back further into the world. We're able to do things inside of that 2D gameplay formula that we couldn't have done before. "It is that 2D classic Sonic game, but because we're using 3D models to create the world and the characters. But now a whole game is being built around this style, which Iizuka said will bring new gameplay opportunities. Sonic Superstars uses a 3D aesthetic, which we've previously seen in the Classic Sonic sections of games like Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. Of course, the biggest difference you'll immediately notice between Sonic Superstars and the 16-bit originals is the graphics. Green Hill Zone, shown here in Super Smash Bros., is an iconic zone. Instead - in classic Genesis fashion - the story will unfold simply by watching characters move around and interact with each other in between levels. Iizuka said there won't be voiceover or a lot of text in the story. The classic approach will also carry over to the story presentation in Sonic Superstars. The additional characters retain the unique actions you'd expect from the series: Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide and climb, and Amy can use her hammer. Sonic Superstars introduces four-player local co-op into the mix, where players can choose between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. You're running, you're jumping, you're getting into a ball, you're defeating enemies and you're continuing forward."īut you won't only get to play as Sonic. So when you're playing Sonic Superstars, you're going through the core classic Sonic game loop. The very first thing the team did was went and replicated that classic gameplay down very precisely. And I'm sure the classic gameplay, you're playing as Sonic, you jump, you go into a ball and you attack the enemies. "One of the things we wanted to do is make sure we really had the roots of that classic gameplay solid.
